Women, Crime and an Informal Economy: Female Offending and Crime for Gain

چکیده

This paper is about women, crime and rationality, the context is the criminal economy. The discussion seeks to critique and build upon the literature on the informal and criminal economies. In particular the chapter will begin to explore women's contribution to these economies. Definitions of the criminal economy are loosely formulated, tend to be simplistic, mechanistic and limited to studies of male offenders, professional and white collar criminals. These definitions are scrutinized to discover whether they may be extended to include activities in which women engage or whether different definitions from a feminist perspective may be more helpful. Three important themes which the paper will address are: first, women and economic crimes, second, generalisability and 'doing genderdoing difference' and third, rational choice, in particular, rationality and the lure and attraction of unlawful opportunities for women.

Several explanations of this convergence have been proposed, in...

Rethinking one of criminology’s ‘brute facts’: The age–crime curve and the crime drop in Scotland

Examining annual variation in the age–crime curve as a way to better understand the recent crime drop, this paper explores how the age distribution of convicted offending changed for men and women in Scotland between 1989 and 2011. This analysis employs shaded contour plots as a method of visualizing annual change in the age–crime curve. Similar to recent findings from the USA, we observed fall...

These neighborhoods are often extremely segregated, resulting in the concentration of deleterious effects, including crime, on communities of color, especially African Americans. We build on previous research by examining how Black a...

Sex Differences in Trajectories of Offending Among Puerto Rican Youth.

Although sex is one of the strongest correlates of crime, contentions remain regarding the necessity of sex-specific theories of crime. The current study examines delinquent trajectories across sex among Puerto Rican youth socialized in two different cultural contexts (Bronx, United States and San Juan, Puerto Rico). Results indicate: similar substantive offending trajectories across males and ...
